We have a temporary opportunity for a landfill scale and equipment operator. Responsibilities for the scale include receiving, screening, recording, and customer billing. Additional responsibilities include the operation and maintenance of specialized landfill and composting equipment. In this physically demanding role, you must be able to work outdoors in varying weather conditions.

  • Ability to follow established policies, procedures, and legislation.
  • Familiar with hazards and safe working practices.
  • Ability to operate and maintain computerized systems, including cash handling.
  • Strong customer service and communication skills.
  • Mechanical aptitude with strong organizational skills.
  • Reliable, self motivated and is a team player.

Qualifications

  • Successful completion of Grade 12 or higher school equivalency diploma.
  • One (1) year experience in landfill and composting operations.
  • Must possess and maintain a valid Class 3 with Air Alberta Vehicle Operator's License with a satisfactory (6 demerits or less) driving record.
  • Alberta Landfill Operator certification.
  • Alberta Compost Facility Operator certification.
  • Current Standard First Aid.
  • Demonstrated ability to perform sustained heavy physical work.

This position has also been identified as Safety Sensitive and requires the completion of a satisfactory pre-employment drug screen.

"Airspace utilization factor" (AUF) (kilograms of waste per cubic metre of landfill airspace) means the effective density of waste material in the landfill. The AUF is recorded as the total weight of waste material passing over the landfill scales that is buried in the landfill cell. Through specialized operator training and innovative equipment and technology the City's 2022 AUF average was 860 kg/m3 which will assist the City in extending the life of it's infrastructure.
